Chapter
25
Since I was at the police station, I decided to drive across the parking lot to the jail for a visit with my granddad. I knew he’d balk, but I needed to see him, needed to know he was all right. More so, I needed to bask in his strength.
Once I was allowed to finally see him an hour later, I knew I’d made the right decision. Jack gave me his grumpy smile and the anger at Danny and my fear for the future faded. That being said, I didn’t let Jack see the fear of what might happen to him on my face if the tape proved useless like Danny thought. I focused our talk on the distillery, and Jack seemed happy to oblige.
Of course I never once mentioned Roger’s embezzlement. He’d find out about that soon enough. I just hoped it wouldn’t be the final straw that broke his already damaged heart.
We did talk about the fire and how to proceed with the repairs. Unfortunately, our deductible was more than the repair would cost. I’d have to find the cash somewhere. The idea chilled me to the core.
After our visit, I sat in my car in the parking lot and dialed the county inspector’s office. A snotty receptionist informed me that the inspector would be over to check the structural integrity in two weeks. Not a minute sooner, no matter how much I pleaded. A few seconds later, she hung up on me. I stared at the phone for a long minute, taking steadying breaths.
From there, I headed to the diner for an early dinner, my stomach rumbling. My only caloric intake since this morning had been a Jolly Rancher I’d found tucked in my driver’s seat. Mind you, a lint-coated Jolly Rancher. My mind and body needed to refuel.
I also needed to regroup. Sort through my list of suspects. Rue Gett remained at the top of the list. Especially after the way Danny had acted. Had he seen something on the tape that suggested the driver to be Rue or maybe even Brodie? Was that why he snatched the tape?
Alone at the counter of the Gett Diner, I mapped out my suspects on a napkin. At the top, I placed Rue, then Brodie, followed by Boone, Danny, Evan, Mary, and Unknown. The unknown category bothered me most. The possibility that Roger had been killed simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time always loomed. Then again, only someone familiar with Gett, Florida, would know about the Lucky distillery along with Moonshine Run. Blowing out a harsh breath, I eliminated Danny and Mary from the list. Both had alibis, as far as I knew. Danny was at the station at the time, and Mary was in bed, her car parked in the driveway all night. Which left Rue, Brodie, Boone, and my own cousin.
Crap. I needed to find the driver of that car in the video. Only then would I have enough proof to convince Danny or, if need be, go over his head to the Attorney General.
